Tools of the Trade

Tools of the Trade

  • Cat toenail clippers - it doesn't take much time to learn to trim the tips at home.
  • Small plastic hair brush with hair remover built in - the teeth are well spaced and short, but deep enough to get to the undercoat.
  • Magnetic flap cat door - Remember your dog is small and you'll want something easy to push. However, only use this if you've got a fenced in back yard.
  • Dog Harness - When traveling with your friend, this is the safest way to go. Offers a built in handle for emergency escapes and helps prevent the matting around the neck that a collar encourages.
  • Light Walking Lead - Goes hand in hand for exploring with your friend.
  • Doggy Pack - Can be used to carry your pom puppy in congested or high traffic areas in addition to storing snacks and water when you are out and about.

Pom Health

  • First item on the list is to get a good vet with a great small dog bedside manner. This vet will be your partner in your pet's health so don't be afraid to schedule "introductory" visits just to see how you will get along.
  • Only feed your new family member whole food. Skip over the chow with wheat or corn fillers or made with meat by-products. If they don't list foods you understand in the ingredients list, then it is not good enough for your canine family member. We use Innova and Karma brand foods in our castle.
  • Poms have a history of knee problems. We have avoided this issue in our poms by using a suppliment called Dog Bloom VM Supreme. Another breeder turned us on to this wonder "cheese powder" and now our poms won't feast without it! Just a pinch sprinkled on top of the food bowl every time you fill it is all you need. Bonus - it's great for their coats, too.
  • Bioguard dog shampoo smells great and helps with brushing after your dog is bathed and dry. And it won't affect your flea treatments either.
