A BREED FOR ROYALTY
Long,
long ago, (about 100 years) in a cold part of the Old World
called Pomerania - now part of Germany, at times part of Poland - the rulers called upon the Wizards of
Creatures (Spitz specialists, they were) to produce for them smaller dogs bearing the name of the
region. These small dogs would be bred to fulfill specific purposes in life, like sitting on laps
and keeping hands warm, and providing cheerful accompaniment through cold Winter months.
And so it was, starting with larger dogs like Huskies, Norwegian Elkhounds, Samoyeds, and Keeshonds, the Wizards selectively bred for
smaller and smaller until this wonderful breed evolved, small in stature, joyful in spirit, luxurious
and various of coat. Unfortunately the breed is loyal to the Order of the Purposeful Prevention
of the Pulling on of Stockings. This amusing yet potentially irritating trait can be avoided by
donning ones socks out of view of the ever watchful poms.
Poms occur in all these color varieties - please let us know if you know of a pom color that is not in this list!
Black,
white,
ice white,
red,
orange,
cream,
parti,
black and tan,
brindle,
chocolate,
beaver,
merle,
blue,
red sable,
orange sable,
cream sable,
wolf sable.
The sabling in the different sable colors refers to the black tipping on some hairs, like on Rocky giving
the black shaded look. The black hairs are a bit coarser than other hairs on the dog. Peaches has some reverse
sabling between her shoulder blades, where the hairs are black close to her skin, and get much lighter near the tips.
